Homemade Single Salve Packs Tutorial Project & Recipe

The unique color of each homemade salve is a delightful reflection of the oil infusion used. For instance, Cottonwood Bud Salve boasts a warm brown-orange shade, while Oregano & Eucalyptus Salve has a honey-yellow tint. The Healing Herbal Salve we’re making today features a radiant golden hue, thanks to the combination of calendula and chamomile flowers.

Calendula extracts possess anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. In herbal medicine, calendula tinctures are applied topically to treat acne, alleviate inflammation, control bleeding, and soothe irritated tissues.

Follow the recipe below to create this amazing healing herbal salve:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups high-quality olive oil
  • 0.3 oz. dried calendula flowers
  • 0.3 oz. dried chamomile flowers
  • 0.3 oz. dried plantain
  • 0.2 oz. dried St. John’s wort
  • 0.2 oz. dried Oregon grape root
  • 1-2 ounces beeswax
  • 1 Vitamin E capsule

Instructions:

  1. Use a kitchen scale to measure the dried herbs.
  2. Prepare the oil infusion using one of the two methods below: Cold Infusion Combine the herbs with 1 ¼ cup of oil in a glass mason jar, stirring well. Allow the oil and herb mixture to steep for 4-6 weeks.

Hot Oil Extract Mix the herbs with 1 ¼ cup of oil in a glass mason jar. Place the jar in a pot on the stove or in a crockpot, both lined with a towel and filled with a few inches of water at the lowest setting. Infuse the oil and herbs for 4-8 hours, a day, or up to 3 days. Note: Monitor the pot and replenish water as it evaporates.

  1. Strain the oil and herb infusion through a cheesecloth, squeezing to extract as much oil as possible. Aim to strain at least 1 cup of herb-infused oil.
  2. In a saucepan on very low heat, melt the beeswax and oil together.
  3. Once you achieve the desired consistency, add the Vitamin E capsule. Stir the mixture and pour the salve into your chosen containers.
