The Greatest SHTF Killer and How to Stop It
There are enemies all around us.
Before we understood pathogens people explained disease using God. If you were doing something to anger your god he might make you sick. Before an understanding of germ theory the ways that sickness was diagnosed and cured is actually quite interesting.
Today we are not as terrified of germs unless we have children or we are older. This is because we have an easy out when it comes to bacteria, viruses and all pathogens for that matter. There are very few pathogens that will kill us and there is nothing we can do about it.
In a collapse scenario, all that changes. When the antibiotics stop being made and the medicines become harder to find people will die from simple things. When water is tainted you will see people die from diarrhea. It may sound crazy but it’s true. If you are constantly drinking questionable water you will die from dehydration through vomit and diarrhea.
Resources analyst Erik Peterson, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, describes the water crisis this way:
“At any given time, close to half the population of the developing world is suffering from waterborne diseases associated with inadequate provision of water and sanitation services,” Mr. Peterson explained. “There are about four billion cases of diarrhea disease per year, resulting in about one or two million deaths, some ninety percent of which, tragically, are in children under the age of five.” https://www.voanews.com/a/a-13-2005-03-17-voa34-67381152/274768.html
The only way to combat that is by washing your hands regularly. Of course, washing hands and keeping clean will become much harder when water is not coming from our taps. You must have a plan. Just one month after a collapse you are going to see levels of disease and infection and filth that are hard to believe.
End of Services like Trash, Sewage and Burial
What will you do with the dead? What will you do with the trash and the raw sewage that will back up. Will every citizen turns into an honest and caring person who will be accountable for their waste? Of course not.
- Sewage and human waste will contaminate water ways
- The dead will rot in their homes or in yards
- These pests will carry pathogens
- Trash will pile up and pest populations will increase
Creating a small sanitation kit today is the best thing you can do. This kit should include the following items:
- Combat One hygiene system
- Baking Soda
- Disposable aprons
- Dust masks
- 2 boxes of rubber gloves
- Large contractor bags
- 2 trash cans with lids
This system was created to aid American military spec ops soldiers in the field. The present-day mountains of Afghanistan or the streets of Mosul look a lot like a SHTF scenario. This system was designed for an environment where water was sparse but keeping clean and utilizing strong personal hygiene practices can win the day.
For the military, there are many soldiers lost to sickness and injury. This product was designed to mitigate that by providing waterless sprays, foams and wipes to clean you without using water.
COMBAT ONE products are powered by a substance that us as preppers are familiar with. It’s the antibacterial power of colloidal silver.
Of the many items I listed in this article for your use against pathogens in a SHTF scenario these products are one of the most important. Water will be a very real struggle for most of us each day. I take these cues from real world and the struggles of the third world.
Guns, lights, dry food and optics are a lot of fun to buy but if you aren’t prepared to deal with dangerous pathogens that will kill more people than any gun or knife in a post disaster. Be prepared.
